Rainforests absorb and store billions of tons of carbon

We cannot slow climate change without saving tropical forests. They are cost-effective nature-based solutions working for our benefit today, absorbing and storing carbon. Yet, despite the incredible benefits they provide, rainforests face the greatest risks of destruction among all forest types: In 2024, nearly all forest loss (94%) occurred in the tropics.

Deforestation accelerates climate change and amplifies its impacts in several ways:

      • Land-clearing and fires release carbon stored in trees, leaves, and soils, and transfer it to the atmosphere.
      • Rainforest loss destabilizes climate across the planet.
      • Destruction of rainforests makes nature and people less resilient and vulnerable to hotter temperatures, storms, droughts, floods, and rising seas.

We must halt deforestation to keep carbon safely locked up and to keep removing excess CO2 from the atmosphere. Protecting tropical forests is one of the best ways each of us can fight climate change right now.

Explore Forest Types

Rainforests store and sequester vast quantities of carbon. We fight to keep carbon stored and stop climate change by supporting high-impact projects in three types of forest:

Frontier Forests

These forests massively reduce carbon emissions in the immediate future because they protect forest in imminent danger of destruction鈥攁 so-called "frontier" providing a protective barrier, keeping dense forest intact.

Super-Sequesterers

Forests inundated by water are particularly efficient sequesterers because the water blocks the oxygen required for carbon-releasing decomposition. These include flooded forests, swamp forests, peat forests and mangroves.

Carbon Vaults

These forests lock up carbon in large, tall, intact hardwood forests in perpetuity for a reasonable cost. These large trees store vast amounts of carbon in their wood, roots and soil, preventing huge amounts of carbon from being released.
